The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology published its 2026 Cyber Security Skills audit on Tuesday. The headline number — 58,400 unfilled cybersecurity roles across the UK economy — represents a 19% increase year-on-year and the largest workforce shortfall in any technical discipline.
Behind the figure lies a more uncomfortable structural problem: 71% of advertised roles require five-plus years of experience, while only 14% of new entrants meet that bar.
